Whose Driving Your Life?

I’m a recovering control freak.
But I have been working at the recovery part and really, I have improved quite a bit in my ability to accept ideas from other people and refrain from offering directions to those driving.

But sometimes I still struggle with letting Jesus sit in the driver’s seat of my life. I want my life to go in the direction I’ve planned out. It’s hard for me to accept God’s route without offering a few route suggestions of my own. Yet I have found that when I have moved to the passenger seat, my loving Lord has taken me to a far better place than I would have chosen for myself.

Jesus said,

“Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead.
You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am…
Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self.
What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself?”
Matthew 16:24 (The Message)

This passage and my own experience have shown me three advantages to being in the passenger seat of life:

  • When I let God drive, I can relax.
  • God knows the best route to real fulfillment.
  • Letting go of control is the way to finding my true self.

Let’s move over and let Jesus get in the driver’s seat!
